It’s May, Mental Health Awareness Month, so just checking in… “How are you doing?”

This is a time to raise awareness about mental health’s impact on a person’s overall well-being. Amid daily life and the ongoing stressors from global events, prioritizing mental health is more crucial than ever. In fact, according to Calm’s 2024 Voice of the Workplace Report, there’s a lot of work to be done: a staggering 69% of survey respondents said their mental health stayed the same or got worse in the past year. Mental health challenges, including anxiety and trouble sleeping, are not only affecting personal lives but are also impacting performance in the workplace for 60% of workers.

As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, let us remember that mental health conditions can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, race, ethnicity, or income level. The more we foster open dialogues and cultivate empathy, the more we pave the way for a healthier, more understanding community. Together, we can combat the stigma associated with mental health care, empowering everyone to seek the help they need without shame or guilt.

Numerous organizations dedicated to mental health awareness and services will participate in Mental Health Awareness Month. For example, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has prepared a “Take the Moment” campaign to encourage empathy, understanding, and open conversations surrounding mental health.

According to NAMI, one in five adults experience mental illness each year and only have of them receive treatment. The average delay between the onset of mental illness symptoms and treatment is 11 years.

Building a sustainable toolbox for mental wellness is not just about addressing severe challenges but also about strengthening our mental fitness daily—both in our personal lives and at work.

Here are some actionable steps you can take:

Acknowledging the need for mental health care is the first stride toward improved well-being. Whether booking a therapy session, joining a support group, or simply talking to a friend about your feelings, every small step is a leap toward better mental health.

Simple, daily practices like mindfulness exercises, regular physical activity, and maintaining a gratitude journal can significantly enhance your mental resilience. Establish a routine that is easy to follow yet effective in keeping stress at bay.

In the workplace and beyond, you can be an advocate by being open about your own experiences and supporting others in their journey. Promote an inclusive culture where conversations are normalized and encouraged.

Encourage your organization to implement equitable programs accessible to all employees. This includes providing resources, training sessions, and time off for mental health care. This toolkit from the Center for Workplace Mental Health provides tips and resources for supporting mental health and well-being at work.

It is clear that the journey toward mental wellness is both urgent and ongoing. The statistics are more than numbers; they are a reminder of the human struggles behind them. Whether it’s through advocating for comprehensive mental health policies, engaging in personal well-being practices, or simply lending an ear to someone in need, our actions can ignite significant change.

Mental health awareness has come a long way in recent years, but the journey toward destigmatization and improved support is far from over. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has launched its inspiring #MoreThanEnough campaign.

This initiative aims to empower individuals living with mental health conditions, challenge societal misconceptions, and promote understanding and compassion.

Join us as we delve into the heart of NAMI’s campaign and explore how it is reshaping the narrative around mental health.

It’s an opportunity for all of us to come together and remember the inherent value we each hold — no matter our diagnosis, appearance, socioeconomic status, background or ability. We want every person out there to know that if all you did was wake up today, that’s more than enough. No matter what, you are inherently worthy of more than enough life, love and healing. Showing up, just as you are, for yourself and the people around you is more than enough.

Embracing Self-Acceptance: You Are #MoreThanEnough

At the core of NAMI’s #MoreThanEnough campaign is the powerful message of self-acceptance. People living with mental health conditions often face an internal battle, struggling with self-doubt and a sense of inadequacy. NAMI seeks to change this narrative by emphasizing that individuals are more than their diagnoses.

Through personal stories and shared experiences, the campaign highlights the inherent worth and strength possessed by each person, fostering a sense of self-acceptance and empowerment.

Celebrating Resilience

Living with a mental health condition requires immense strength and resilience. NAMI’s campaign aims to celebrate the triumphs and resilience of individuals navigating their mental health journeys. By showcasing stories of resilience, the campaign encourages others to embrace their own strength and realize that they too possess the power to overcome challenges.

#MoreThanEnough serves as a powerful reminder that no matter the hurdles one faces, they are not defined by their struggles, but rather by their ability to rise above them.

Breaking Down Stigmas

Stigmas surrounding mental health can perpetuate stereotypes, isolation, and prevent individuals from seeking help. NAMI’s campaign confronts these stigmas head-on, challenging misconceptions and dismantling the barriers that hinder open dialogue about mental health.

By encouraging honest conversations, promoting empathy, and providing accurate information, #MoreThanEnough aims to reshape societal attitudes toward mental health. This transformation will pave the way for increased understanding, compassion, and ultimately, more effective support systems.

Fostering Inclusivity

NAMI’s campaign recognizes the importance of inclusivity in mental health discussions. Mental health conditions do not discriminate based on age, gender, race, or any other societal constructs. #MoreThanEnough strives to ensure that everyone’s experiences are acknowledged and validated.

By amplifying diverse voices and experiences, NAMI encourages an inclusive dialogue that dismantles systemic biases and promotes equal access to mental health resources and support.

Advocacy and Action

The #MoreThanEnough campaign extends beyond awareness; it also serves as a call to action. NAMI urges individuals to actively engage in mental health advocacy by sharing their stories, supporting local mental health organizations, and advocating for policies that prioritize mental health care.

The campaign empowers people to make a tangible difference, creating a ripple effect that will help shape a society where mental health is treated with the importance and care it deserves.

Making an Impact on Mental Health Awareness

NAMI’s #MoreThanEnough campaign is a powerful reminder that every individual living with a mental health condition is more than enough – they are resilient, strong, and deserving of understanding and support. By promoting self-acceptance, challenging stigmas, fostering inclusivity, and advocating for change, NAMI is making a significant impact on mental health awareness.

Let us join forces with NAMI this Mental Health Awareness Month to create a world where mental health is prioritized, stigma is eradicated, and every person feels seen, heard, and supported. Together, we can make a difference, one compassionate step at a time.

To help raise awareness and open up the conversation, the month of September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

Let’s Work Together to Break Past the Stigma

We can all help shed some light on suicide prevention. That’s why we must continue working to break past the stigma surrounding mental health issues and to address these issues head on. Most importantly, talking about it increases our awareness as a community and brings this widespread issue into the public consciousness.

When you change the way you think, that is what changes the world.
Be a Leader in the Suicide Prevention Conversation

The goal is to continue to raise awareness about suicide prevention, reduce the stigma around suicide, and encourage well-informed action. Everyone can play a role.

The “Together for Mental Health” Campaign

Throughout September, NAMI will be highlighting the “Together for Mental Health” campaign. The Campaign encourages people to come together and unite to advocate for better mental health care, including an effective crisis response system. NAMI is an invaluable resource when it comes to gaining access to mental health and crisis resources.

Ultimately, NAMI wants any person experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors to have a number to call and a system to turn to for support. Together, we can advocate for better access to mental health care and build awareness surrounding how to respond in a crisis.
